Is Your Home Smoke Alarm Ready For 2027? Heres What Every Queenslander Should Know
If there’s one sound that could save your life, it’s the beep of a working smoke alarm.

What’s Changing and Why It Matters
Queensland law now requires every home to have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms installed in:
- Every bedroom
- Hallways that connect bedrooms
- Each level of your home
If there are no bedrooms on a level, you’ll still need a smoke alarm installed in the path to the exit.
These alarms must:
- Comply with AS 3786–2014 (photoelectric type)
- Be interconnected so when one goes off, they all do
- Be hard-wired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery
- Be less than 10 years old and working when tested
By 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes including rentals and those being sold must meet these standards.

For homeowners, don’t wait for the deadline. Make sure your alarms are up to date, interconnected, and correctly positioned on the ceiling away from corners, fans, and vents.
