5 Electrical Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
At Wire-Not Electrical, we know that a safe home starts with a safe electrical setup. You might not see what’s going on behind the walls, but there are clear signs when something isn’t quite right. As licensed Master Electricians working across Brisbane, we follow Queensland’s electrical safety regulations and make sure every job meets code.
Here are five common warning signs we often come across in homes. If you notice any of these, it’s time to give us a call. Ignoring the signs could put your safety at risk and may lead to bigger issues down the line.
1. Burning Smell or Heat from Power Points
A burning smell or warm power point is never normal. It usually means the internal wiring is overheating or arcing. In many cases, this is due to loose terminals or overloaded circuits, which can lead to fires if left unattended.
What you can do and how we fix it:
Switch off power to the circuit at your switchboard and contact us straight away. We’ll inspect the outlet, test the circuit, and repair it
in line with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules.
2. Flickering or Dimming Lights
If your lights flicker or dim when appliances are turned on, it may indicate an overloaded circuit or poor wiring
connections. This is especially common in older homes that haven't had their systems upgraded.
What we do
Our qualified Electrician will check for voltage drops, make sure your loads are balanced, and recommend any upgrades if your current
setup isn’t keeping up with today’s power demands.
3. Safety Switches or Breakers Tripping Often
It’s normal for a safety switch to trip occasionally. That’s a sign it’s doing its job. But if it keeps happening, there could be a fault in your appliances, wiring, or insulation.
In Queensland, RCD protection is required on final sub-circuits in homes, and frequent tripping should be investigated.
What we to
We’ll track down the fault and get it fixed. If your switchboard’s outdated, we might recommend an upgrade to bring it up to current safety
standards.
4. Warm or Loose Power Points and Switches
Power points and switches should feel cool and secure. If they feel warm or wiggle when touched, the connections inside may
be loose. That increases the risk of short circuits or electric shocks.
What we do
Our Electrician can test your earth system and check for any neutral integrity problems. If necessary, we’ll liaise with Energex to
resolve supply issues on your property.
5. Electric Shocks or Tingles
A small shock or tingling sensation from a tap or appliance is never normal. It often points to an earthing issue or poor
bonding. This is a serious safety risk and should be addressed immediately.
What we do
A Wire-Not Electrician will test your earth system and check for any neutral integrity problems. If necessary, we’ll liaise with Energex
to resolve supply issues on your property.
